Links
Part of the reason why this blog exists is because we were inspired by other football blogs.
Here are some of our favorites.
IN BED WITH MARADONA
Inspired by the one and only Diego Armando Maradona. Where else can one read what it’s like being the cousin of Lionel Messi and then view a photos of Fabio Capello and his bone-chilling death stare ever present even in his playing days.
DIRTY TACKLE
From “If It Continued…” to “DTotD” (Dirty Tackle of the Day), Yahoo!’s football blog consistently taps into the funny bone of football culture. Brooks Peck is a national treasure.
GIRLS IN GOAL
A weekly podcast produced by Ivannah and Ayla covering the happenings in Major League Soccer and the US National team from Space City. That’s Houston, Texas for those unfamiliar with the nicknames of major US cities (how are you going to win Jeopardy if you don’t know that).
GAY 4 SOCCER
A love for the beautiful game with insights, analysis and efforts to end homophobia from the sport. Read the Allies page and if you don’t agree with every bit of that, something is wrong with you.
ZONAL MARKING
While the general voice around Cheeky Backheel is of the tongue-in-cheek/witty nature, we do love some analysis of tactics. This is where Zonal Marking comes into play with some absolutely mind-blowing analysis of tactics. For the football nerd in you, go here and bring a paper fan because you might catch the vapors.
SONAR FEED
On a night in which the Seattle Sounders FC and San Jose Earthquakes met in a US Open Cup quarter-final fixture, the technology gods missed the memo from the football gods and whatever dial-up modem San Jose was using to broadcast the match on the Internet was consistently broken. From that came opportunity as three Seattle Sounders FC supporters used their mobile devices to broadcast the match and for once, the heroes of the beautiful game were not those on the field, but those in the stands.
INSIDE SPANISH FOOTBALL
One of the most comprehensive sources of anything and everything about Spanish football. Guess what people, Spanish football goes way beyond Barcelona and Real Madrid and this is one of the best places to get the latest.
CASCADIA DOMINUS
Todd Hodges may very well lay the claim of being the first fan of Cheeky Backheel. The power of bribery, boys and girls. Mr. Hodges runs a podcast specializing in the happy little region of football in North America’s Pacific Northwest known as Cascadia (because of the Cascade Range -mountains that run from British Columbia, Canada to Washington and Oregon states). He is a Sounders fan no matter what, but he also talks about whatever may be happening with neighbors to the north, Vancouver Whitecaps FC and the south, Portland Timbers. Insightful and his calm, dulcet tones are a nice balance to the yelling and bickering that populates our own podcast.
THE UNITED STATES OF SOCCER
So fresh and new you can still smell the shrink wrap on it. A blog covering the United States Men’s National Team, run by Adam Bodnar.
FUTEBOL DE CAMPO
A photoblog of matches that career journalist Fábio Soares has attended around Brazil, and it is glorious. A common quip about the beautiful game played in Brazil is that, “The English invented it, the Brazilians perfected it.” The style of play that made it beautiful is definitely carried over into the pictures of supporters Soares captures in his pictures.
