The FIFA 14 Soundtrack
FIFA 14 drops next week. Maybe you’ve heard of this video game. Now the norm with a lot of video games is the use of licensed music to create a soundtrack. Marketing bands with new music? Of course, and sports video games are no exception and the FIFA series has always garnered praise for having some of the best music to accompany the achievements made on the virtual pitch. Let’s take a look at some of the songs that will be on this year’s edition. To see the full list, click here.
Bloc Party “Ratchet”
I have to assume the folks that develop FIFA are fans of Bloc Party because here’s another FIFA where they’re in the soundtrack. That’s not a bad thing because I dig ‘em. Yes it’s years old, but I still play “Like Eating Glass” and this song “Ratchet” continues the consistency I’ve experienced with Bloc Party.
Empire Of The Sun “Alive”
I first discovered the Empire Of The Sun song “Alive” about a month ago and my gut reaction to it was that it’s totally a FIFA song. Glad I was able to sense it being included into the mix. It covers the checklist of a perfect pop song for a video game.
Nine Inch Nails “Copy Of A”
I don’t know about the Nine Inch Nails song “Copy Of A.” I remember Charlie telling me his thoughts on the new album, Hesitation Marks, and not in a good light. Listening to the song, it feels more like just a Nine Inch Nails song in name only. I will say I was anticipating that the song would be edited heavily based on lyrical content as I remember with another EA Sports title, MVP Baseball 2005 they edited considerably the song “Funny Little Feeling” from the Rock ‘N’ Roll Soldiers. Not the case here in terms of cutting out lyrics, but the NIN song is…meh. Not exactly instilling confidence in me to check out Reznor’s latest album.
The Chain Gang Of 1974 “Miko”
You probably heard of their other song “Sleepwalking” being used in another video game that you might’ve heard. Something called Grand Theft Auto 5. This Denver band sure hit it big having their songs attached to two high profile games in the same year. Well done to them, though I think I’ll take “Sleepwalking” because of the once-again genius placing Rockstar did with it to hype GTA 5.
Miles Kane “Don’t Forget Who You Are”
Without a doubt influenced by The Beatles, but man is this is catchy song. Don’t know much of Miles Kane, but this song definitely has my attention and I will now check out some of his other stuff.
The Royal Concept “On Our Way”
Prediction: this song will be used by some network for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. It’s just a perfect song to embody the optimism and celebration of the beautiful game at it’s gala tournament, when we can all put aside our cynicism of the politics of the beautiful game. I mean just look at the music video. So much happy. It’s infectious.
Karol Conka “Boa Noite”
Oh like they weren’t going to include some tracks from Brazil, home of the next World Cup. I’m reminded of the excellent album The Rough Guide To Brazilian Hip-Hop from The Rough Guide Music Network. And I swear one day I will learn Portugese so I can hope to translate the lyrics from that album.
Briefly skimming through the rest of the songs (of what I could find on YouTube) it’s shaping up to be another solid effort from EA. Yes the biggest publisher has plenty to be criticized about, but once again, they’ve picked out some songs that work well in conveying with the many emotions we experience in the beautiful game. Whether it’s watching a live game or playing one out in the virtual world, when that match winner howler is buried in, you’re gonna invoke an emotion. What are you thoughts on the FIFA 14 soundtrack?
I wasn’t able to find the Chinza Dopeness song “T.U.B.E.” that will be in the game, but I did come across this video that you just have to see and try make sense of what the hell did you just see.
